Become the Thane of the Rift

Quick Walkthrough

1. Befriend the Jarl of Riften (Laila Law-Giver by default, Maven Black-Briar if the Empire has taken Riften).
2. Assist the people of the hold.
3. Deal with the Skooma trade.
4. Purchase Honeyside.
5. Return to the Jarl for your reward.

Detailed Walkthrough

This is an umbrella quest for several other quests that must be completed if you wish to become Thane of the Rift.

In order to be eligible for Riften Thaneship, you have to help several citizens which may include any five of the Miscellaneous Quests for the Rift, as listed in the following tables

Shor's Stone

The reward, the Blade of the Rift, is a random, leveled, enchanted weapon. Despite its name, it can be nearly any weapon, including a non-bladed weapon like a Mace. There is a 50% chance that it will be one-handed and a 50% chance that it will be two-handed.

Notes

• Unlike every other Thane quest, the "Assist the people of <Hold>" part must be completed before the Jarl will make you the offer, and is not tracked in the journal. A new quest "Speak to the Jarl of Riften" will appear under miscellaneous when you have assisted enough people.
• Helping Hand, The Raid and Supply and Demand are required tasks to complete before becoming named Thane of Riften or getting the speech option to buy a house. Unlike other holds, even if the Empire takes Riften, you will still need to complete these quests to become Thane, although you will be allowed to buy Honeyside automatically.

Bugs

• "The Blade of the Rift" is never actually given as a reward: instead, you will receive a generic un-renamed enchanted weapon.
  • PC Only This bug is fixed by version 1.2 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.
• The reward you receive is generated randomly at the beginning of the game, so will always be iron.
  • PC Only This bug is fixed by version 1.2 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.
• Visiting Honeyside for the first time before becoming named Thane of Riften may prevent you from ever being able to be named Thane of Riften. After purchasing the house, immediately speak with the Jarl to avoid this bug.
  • This bug is fixed by version 1.4 of the Official Skyrim Patch.
• It is possible that the dialog with the Jarl will not start, no matter how many people you've helped.

• Sometimes the "Speak to the Jarl of Riften" step gets stuck in the miscellaneous section of the journal. ^?

Notes

• Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
• Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
• Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
• If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
• On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage FreeformRiftenThane stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest FreeformRiftenThane.
