About Me

My name is Philip King, and I'm a PhD student from the UK, studying electronic engineering. I'm writing my thesis now, so my time is likely to be limited, but I hope to be able to help with minor edits and keep an eye out for vandalism.

Why Oblivion?

I bought Oblivion partially as to show what my PC could do. I'd always heard Oblivion was a test of a PC's graphical power, and an article in PC Gamer UK on the mods available to make the game even more breathtaking tempted me to give it a try.

I'm not one of your natural roleplayers however. I generally stick to racing games such as LiveForSpeed or GTR Evolution, with short races for someone with the sort of short-term attention span I possess. However, reading Living In Oblivion left me in fits of giggles and convinced me to buy the GOTY Edition.

How I play

One of the things that impressed me with Oblivion was how relatively freeform it was. Ok, as I said, I'm not one of life's natural RPG players, and so I don't have much of a baseline to work from. However, it's clear that Bethesda were keen to allow you to attack the storyline at whatever pace you chose, and not allow any potential lack of skill on the player's part stop you from finishing the story.

Or even starting it for that matter. I tend to play Oblivion with Modular Oblivion Enhanced's "Main Quest Delayer" feature, which starts you aboard a ship in Anvil's harbour instead of in the Imperial dungeons. Therefore, the emperor isn't assassinated, and you're free of the (in my opinion) rather annoying trips into the plains of Oblivion.

My characters, pretty much without fail, end up as Battlemages. I normally complete the Knights of Nine and Arena quests reasonably early on, and become a member of the Fighter's and Mage's guilds. I then tend to work towards becoming a Master of Alchemy, touring Cyrodil's main cities buying ingredients (or pilfering them from the guilds) and grinding potions.

I generally suck at the skills of the Thief and the Assassin such as Sneak - not just because my character doesn't have the required skill level; I've just never been very good at stealth-based games! However, I do tend towards Marksman (I'm an archer in real life), often making my character a strange kind of tank-type crusader mage archer. Therefore I tend to define my own custom class!

Windows 7

I'm hoping to try out Windows 7 beta over the weekend, and I'll try installing Oblivion on it. It'll be interesting to see if Oblivion plays nicely with Direct X 11, which has apparently been released as part of the beta. I'll be running it on my old PC, specs to the right. I'll report hopefully after the weekend.
