Oblivion:Patch

Upgrading Oblivion to the latest patch is highly recommended, as many bugs and glitches are often fixed by the patches. Performance has also greatly been improved since the original version of Oblivion.

  • Users that purchased Oblivion through Steam do not need to manually patch their copy of Oblivion, the latest patch is automatically incorporated into the game when it is downloaded, and subsequent patches are released through automatic updates.
  • The 5th Anniversary Edition comes with the 1.2.0416 patch but this is applied only when disk 2 (Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles) is installed. Installing only disk 1 gives Oblivion version 1.1.425. So install both [verification needed — True of UK edition at least].

Version 1.2.0416

This patch is available for download for PC users and over Xbox Live for Xbox 360 users.

This is the final version of the FormID patch, and was released on 4/30/2007. See the Official Patch page for details.

Xbox 360 users will automatically be prompted to download the patch when they connect to Xbox Live. To confirm that the FormID patch has been installed, Xbox 360 users should check the "Video" screen under "Options". The bottom left corner of the Video screen will read "Version 1.2.1" if this FormID patch has been installed; without this patch it will read "Version 1.2" (if other previous patches have not been installed, the version may be missing completely or may read "Version 1.1").

For PC users there are two distinct versions of this patch: one is specifically for users who have installed Shivering Isles and the other is for users who have not installed Shivering Isles (both versions are available for all localized versions of Oblivion/SI). The FormID bug that is fixed by this patch affects all versions of Oblivion (even if Shivering Isles has not been installed) and therefore should be installed by all players. Bethesda's Shivering Isles FAQ provides additional information about SI-related issues.

On the PC, if you get an error message about "Old file not found", first check that you downloaded the correct version of the patch (Shivering Isles and vanilla Oblivion have two different patches) or the correct English patch version. European and Australian discs have a different patch than North America game disc. The other reason for this error message is that you previously installed one of the Shivering Isles beta patches. Any PC users who installed the first Shivering Isles beta patch (version 1.2.0410) need to uninstall and reinstall Oblivion in order to install the final version of this patch. This problem also occurs if you are using the Direct2Drive version of Shivering Isles as the current patch is not compatible with it. PC users who installed the second beta patch (Version 1.2.0416) do not actually need to install the final patch, because other than the download file name it is identical to the beta patch.

This patch will prevent any further loss of items or other buggy behavior that may have been caused by the Shivering Isles Reference Bug. However, it will not restore any items that were previously lost, nor will it fix any other errors introduced into save files after FormID rollover had occurred. Items are lost because they are never added to the save file, and it is therefore impossible to retrieve them. It is recommended that players resume play using a save from before rollover occurred.

Patch Fixes

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a crash caused by bad form IDs
  • Fixes an issue where the game would try to use a form ID that was either restricted or not available yet.
  • Fixed an issue where form IDs were not being marked as free properly, causing objects to disappear in game.

Known Issues

  • Some users of nVidia cards have reported experiencing frequent crashes after installing this patch. The crashes manifest as a black screen with a looping sound after going through a door. For more information and a solution to this problem, see this forum thread.

Version 1.2.0416 (Beta)

A small update to the beta patch below, released on 4/17/2007. See the Official Patch page for details.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a crash caused by bad form IDs.
  • Fixed an issue where the game would try to use form IDs that were either restricted or not available yet.

Version 1.2.0410 (Beta)

This was a beta patch to address the Shivering Isles Reference Bug and was released by Bethesda on 4/11/2007.

This patch is incompatible with the Version 1.2.0214 patch that was previously released. Therefore, anyone who previously installed the version 1.2.0214 patch (but not users who installed Shivering Isles without the patch) will be forced to do a complete uninstall and reinstallation of Oblivion. Reinstall Oblivion in the following order:

  1. Oblivion from original DVD
  2. Knights of the Nine and any other previous downloaded content
  3. Shivering Isles
  4. The 1.2.0410 beta patch

It has also been reported that instead of a complete uninstall it is possible to just rename the "Oblivion.exe" file, install Shivering Isles, and then install the beta patch. See Reference Bug for information on other unofficial and temporary fixes that are currently available (and that do not require a complete uninstall of Oblivion).

This is a beta patch, and therefore will not be released on Xbox Live. Xbox 360 users need to wait until Bethesda releases an official patch and Microsoft approves its release over Xbox Live.
