Quick Walkthrough
- Ajira tells you you can recover the Staff of Magnus from the Assu cave.
- Travel to the cave, and fight your way through to the last mage, Dreveni Hlaren.
- Defeat Dreveni Hlaren, and recover the artifact from her corpse.
- Return the staff to Ajira, and she will let you keep it.
Detailed Walkthrough
The Staff of Magnus
Once you've reached the rank of Warlock, Ajira in the Balmora Guild of Mages will tell you about the Staff of Magnus. This isn't a quest per se, but merely a chance to acquire a powerful magical item for your arsenal.
In Search of the Staff
The staff is located in the cave of Assu, on the slopes of Mount Kand, northwest of Molag Mar. If you look at your paper map, you'll find Mount Kand in the lower southeastern corner of the island. The quickest route is to grab a Silt Strider from Balmora to Suran and onto Molag Mar, or use a guild guide to travel to Wolverine Hall and cast an Almsivi Intervention spell.
From the Silt Strider, head north. Take the north road on the first intersection (follow the sign to Mount Kand). On the next intersection take the left road (it goes up the mountain). After you pass the entrance to Mount Kand, Cavern look to the right for a small road, which doubles back to go even higher up the mountain. The entrance to Assu can be found at the end of that road.
Assu Cave
The caverns are not too large but contain, along with Dreveni Hlaren, a few Daedroth, a Frost Atronach and another mage. Dreveni Hlaren, who can be found in the last cavern, is level 20 and wields the Staff of Magnus and is difficult to take out, especially if she falls in the water. A levitate spell here is of great use. The mage casts several summon type spells and hits for a good amount with the staff. Once she's taken care of, take the staff and look around for various treasures.
Once you have the staff, make sure to show it to Ajira so that you will be able to take her last quest, the Warlock's Ring.
Bugs
- If your disposition with Ajira is less than 70, she will not give you this quest, and will tell you to come back when you are a Warlock, even if you already have that rank. ?
