Once you've reached the rank of Warlock, [[Morrowind:Ajira|Ajira]] in the [[Morrowind:Balmora|Balmora]] [[Morrowind:Guild_of_Mages_(Balmora)|Guild of Mages]] will tell you about the [[Morrowind:Staff of Magnus (artifact)|Staff of Magnus]]. This isn't a quest ''per se'', but merely a chance to acquire a powerful magical item for your arsenal.
===In Search of the Staff===
The staff is located in the cave of [[Morrowind:Assu|Assu]], on the slopes of [[Morrowind:Mount Kand|Mount Kand]], northwest of [[Morrowind:Molag Mar|Molag Mar]]. If you look at your paper map, you'll find Mount Kand in the lower southeastern corner of the island. The quickest route is to grab a [[Morrowind:Silt Strider|Silt Strider]] from [[Morrowind:Balmora|Balmora]] to [[Morrowind:Suran|Suran]] and onto Molag Mar, or use a guild guide to travel to Wolverine Hall and cast an Almsivi Intervention spell.
From the Silt Strider, head north. Take the north road on the first intersection (follow the sign to Mount Kand). On the next intersection take the left road (it goes up the mountain). After you pass the entrance to [[Morrowind:Mount Kand, Cavern|Mount Kand, Cavern]] look to the right for a small road, which doubles back to go even higher up the mountain. The entrance to [[Morrowind:Assu|Assu]] can be found at the end of that road.

The caverns are not too large but contain, along with [[Morrowind:Dreveni Hlaren|Dreveni Hlaren]], a few [[Morrowind:Daedroth|Daedroth]], a [[Morrowind:Frost Atronach|Frost Atronach]] and another [[Morrowind:Fistelle|mage]]. Dreveni Hlaren, who can be found in the last cavern, is level 20 and wields the [[Morrowind:Staff of Magnus (artifact)|Staff of Magnus]] and is difficult to take out, especially if she falls in the water. A [[Morrowind:Levitate|levitate]] spell here is of great use. The mage casts several summon type spells and hits for a good amount with the staff. Once she's taken care of, take the staff and look around for various treasures.
Once you have the staff, make sure to show it to [[Morrowind:Ajira|Ajira]] so that you will be able to take her last quest, the [[Morrowind:Warlock's Ring (quest)|Warlock's Ring]].
