The {{Lore Link|Empire of Cyrodiil (Interregnum)|Empire of Cyrodiil}}{{Ref|name=THOTE|{{Cite book|True Heirs of the Empire}}}}{{Ref|name=KOTD|{{Cite book|Knights of the Dragon (book)}}}} refers to an {{Lore Link|Imperial}} state that existed during the early years of the {{Lore Link|Interregnum}}. Although identified as an empire, it differs from the {{Lore Link|Alessian Empire}}, {{Lore Link|Second Empire}}, and {{Lore Link|Third Empire}} in that the only permanent dependency of the Empire was {{Lore Link|Cyrodiil}} itself, and was at no time ruled by a {{Lore Link|Dragonborn}} emperor.

==History==</noinclude>
With the collapse of the Second Empire in {{Year|2E 430}}, its provinces reasserted their independence, leaving the Imperial heartland of Cyrodiil to its own devices. The region remained a bastion of Imperial culture as the rest of {{Lore Link|Tamriel}} rejected its influence. Further, institutions that had been hallmarks of the Second Empire, including the {{Lore Link|Imperial Legion}}, the {{Lore Link|Elder Council}}, and the office of {{Lore Link|Tamrielic Emperors|emperor}}, survived the chaos relatively intact. As such, the Empire of Cyrodiil, as it would come to be known, succeeded the Second Empire as a matter of course. In the absence of legitimate claimants to the Ruby Throne, the Empire of Cyrodiil was ruled over by a succession of pretenders who became emperors mainly via conquest.

The earliest known of these pretenders was {{Lore Link|Durcorach}}, a leader of the {{Lore Link|Reachmen}}, who reigned over the Empire for a time before being slain in battle outside {{Lore Link|Daggerfall}} in {{Year|2E 541}}. He and his successors, a dynasty called the {{Lore Link|Longhouse Emperors}}, held the throne until the death of {{Lore Link|Leovic}} at the hands of {{Lore Link|Varen Aquilarios}} of {{Lore Link|Chorrol}}. Of all of the pretenders who had thus far achieved control of the Empire, the Longhouse Emperors had been some of the more successful ones, having managed to stay in power for a span of several decades.{{ref|name=COTFC4|{{Cite book|Chronicles of the Five Companions 4}}}}

Leovic's usurper, Varen Aquilarios, had been the Duke of Chorrol before leading the Colovian Estates in rebellion against Leovic when he legalized {{Lore Link|Daedra}} worship.{{ref|name=EFEV|{{Cite book|Eulogy for Emperor Varen}}}} After personally killing Leovic and claiming the title of emperor of Cyrodiil, Varen set out to cement his status a legitimate leader of the Empire by retrieving the lost {{Lore Link|Amulet of Kings}}. He was encouraged in this endeavor by the powerful necromancer {{Lore Link|Mannimarco}}, who promised that the Amulet could be used in a ritual to persuade {{Lore Link|Akatosh}} to make Varen a Dragonborn.{{Ref|name=COTFC1|{{Cite book|Chronicles of the Five Companions 1}}}} Mannimarco betrayed Varen, however, and the ritual broke the covenant with Akatosh and set {{Lore Link|Nirn}} adrift in {{Lore Link|Oblivion}} in an event named the {{Lore Link|Soulburst}}.{{ref|name=EFEV}}{{Ref|name=COTFC1}} Varen was believed lost in the event and his wife, {{Lore Link|Clivia Tharn}}, ascended to the Ruby Throne as Empress Regent.{{ref|name=TATOAM|{{Cite book|Travails and Triumphs of a Monarch}}}}{{ref|name=COTFC4}}

Clivia Tharn's reign ushered in a time of increasing instability within the Empire. Swayed by offers of power and immortality, Clivia fell under the thrall of Mannimarco, who persuaded her blame the {{Lore Link|Mages Guild}} for the Soulburst and expel them from the Imperial City, allowing Mannimarco's {{Lore Link|Worm Cult}} to operate freely.{{ref|name=COTFC4}}{{ref|name=TOTBW|{{Cite book|The Order of the Black Worm}}}} Mannimarco himself aspired to become a god and rule not only Nirn, but his master {{Lore Link|Molag Bal}}'s realm of {{Lore Link|Coldharbour}} as well.{{ref|name=TCA|{{Cite book|The Chim-el Adabal}}}} Beyond the Empire's borders, the other nations of Tamriel began to unite into three different alliances in response to perceived Imperial aggression and corruption: the {{Lore Link|Ebonheart Pact}}, {{Lore Link|Daggerfall Covenant}}, and the first {{Lore Link|Aldmeri Dominion}}. Each alliance sought to conquer the Empire of Cyrodiil and place one of their own on the Imperial Throne, triggering the {{Lore Link|Alliance War}} that wracked the whole of Tamriel in {{Year|2E 582}}.{{ref|name=ESO|Events of [[Online:Online|Elder Scrolls Online]]}}. With central Cyrodiil ravaged by war, most of its inhabitants scattered. Some of them hid in the northern and eastern mountains, while others fled south to {{Lore Link|Blackwood}}. The richest of the Imperials, mostly {{Lore Link|Nibenay|Nibenese}}, bought estates in western {{Lore Link|Colovia}}, around the cities of {{Lore Link|Kvatch}} and {{Lore Link|Anvil}}, away from raging war. However, that turned out not to be an ideal choice, as Anvil proclaimed itself a free city and started to attract all sorts of privateers, smugglers, and even pirates.{{ref|group=oog|name=LEoERP|[[General:Loremaster's Episode of ESO-RP ZOS Interview|Loremaster's Episode of ESO-RP]]}}

The Empire did not sit idle as the armies of the alliances forged deep into its territory. It attempted to expand its reach on two fronts: {{Lore Link|High Rock}} and {{Lore Link|Valenwood}}.{{ref|name=ESO}} The invasion of High Rock and {{Lore Link|Hammerfell}} was spearheaded by the infamous Magus-General {{Lore Link|Septima Tharn}}.{{ref|name=BSOHR|{{Cite book|Bangkorai, Shield of High Rock}}}} To the south, an Imperial Legion was mustered from Colovia to annex Valenwood's Arenthia Vale, which by decree of the Count of {{Lore Link|Skingrad}} and the Elder Council was renamed the South Weald.{{Ref|name=YFTT|{{Cite book|Yours for the Taking!}}}} These ventures ultimately failed.{{ref|name=ESO}}

Little is known about the outcome of the war and the Empire of Cyrodiil's subsequent history, but by the time of {{Lore Link|Tiber Septim}}'s {{Lore Link|Tiber Wars|conquests}} in the Ninth Century of the {{Lore Link|Second Era}}, the Empire had long ceased to exist. Cyrodiil was divided between the Nibenese east and Colovian west, and remained so until reunification under the warlord {{Lore Link|Cuhlecain}}, whom Tiber Septim served as a general at the time.{{ref|name=PGE3C|{{Cite book|PGE|3|Cyrodiil}}}}<noinclude>
