Detailed Walkthrough

The Snake Charmer, Avik

If you haven't already talked to the snake charmer, do so now. You won't be able to talk to the Yokudans until you do so. Tip the charmer (only 1 gold) to talk to him. He has a lot of interesting information so select all the options. You should learn about the death of the Yokudan Hayle by the hands of the city guards.

The Yokudans

Travel to the Yokudan camp North of town and talk with the boy (mention Hayle). He too has quite a lot of information to give you so stick with it. You should learn that his mother, Saban, a powerful witch, is chanting to protect Hayle's soul from being captured by the soul snare of the Necromancer N'Gasta (which you've probably heard of by now). She needs to place the two soul stones in the astrological position of the head and tail of the serpent, Hayle's birth sign. Unfortunately the serpent moves throughout the sky and its position cannot be predetermined, thus preventing Hayle from completing his death journey. When the boy, Coyle, asks for your help in the matter, you gladly accept. You may want to take a look at the markings around the starstones since you'll need this to solve the puzzle.

Fixing the Observatory

Hmm, where might one be able to look at the constellations, why the observatory of course, just South of town and North of Saintsport. If you haven't talked to Erasmo, the crazy caretaker of the observatory, do so now. He should, eventually, tell you to place the Dwarven gear at the far end of the device. The gear room is below the telescope and is accessed by the metal panel to the North (step on the small button in front of it). There is a small room to the North with a wheel and a lever in it which disables some steam pipes allowing you an easier path. You don't have to turn it back on later. I don't know if that fan and weights contraption does anything useful for you. Head to the far South in the gear room, being careful of the hot metal parts and steam (you may take a little damage in places but keep moving). Generally if it looks like its glowing it could hurt you. Go south until you come across a lift of some sort, going back and forth horizontally. Trying to avoid the lift, climb up onto the large box with steam coming out of it, but do it on either side of the steam output in order not to get hurt too much. Maneuver around the cylinder and make a jump south across the gap with the hot pipe. You are now standing on top of the little room with the shelf where you place the gear. Carefully make your way down there and walk onto the elevator on the southern side for a quick trip back up top.

Using the Observatory

Now you need to find the head/tail of the serpent using the telescope. There are two ways to the upper walkway. The first is those funky moving steps near the entrance. Just step (or jump if they are moving) on one to be taken to the top. The other is the platform beneath the telescope itself. If it is raised you can lower it by stepping one of those buttons in front of each figure on the wall. This will move the telescope to that particular constellation (12 in all). To further complicate matters the height of the telescope has three settings, adjusting by the wheel on the upper level below the telescope. I found the easiest way to navigate up and down between the levels is to look at each of the three height settings from up top, drop down to the floor by hanging off of the platform arm, move the telescope to the next constellation, and jump on the platform and repeat. If you are careful you can view all constellations without losing any health from falling. The serpent is quite obvious when you see it, so don't worry about missing it.

Deciphering the Signs

You now should have found the constellation with the serpent in it (the head should be in the 9th constellation from the right, a tall figure, most likely the Lord, with the head in the constellation and the tail just below it). This is good but you still won't know where to place the starstones since there are no constellation markers. Well, look no further than up...waaayy up. You may notice that the ceiling of the observatory looks quite similar to the markings in the Yokudans starstone map, except with the constellation runes marked. Its not hard to get dizzy at trying to determine which way is up, so the complete constellation map is shown to the right (no head turning required). The red dots of course signify the position where you must place the two starstones. The starstone map doesn't have the runes marked so you'll have to figure out which dot is which. The large dots are the main constellations (the turquoise-colored runes) and the smaller dots are the minor constellations (the yellow runes). There is only one way to read the map correctly. Also note that Coyle will not let you pick up the starstones until you have actually seen the head and tail of the serpent in the telescope.

Place the Starstones

Now that all the hard work is finished, return to the Yokudan camp and place the starstones in the appropriate positions. Coyle tells you when you have placed them correctly. Talk to Saban now and find out what she knows.
