Many of the animals you encounter during the game are passive creatures, which are non-hostile and unable to attack or harm you. Some, such as insects, are not true creatures but rather are just part of the environment of the game. These animals have a very limited number of animations and the only way to interact with them is by activating them (which may yield bait for fishing). Some are merely aesthetic, and cannot be interacted with at all.
