{{Lore Link|Yngol}} was the son of {{Lore Link|Ysgramor}} and older brother of {{Lore Link|Ylgar}}.{{ref|name=SOTR2|{{Cite book|Songs of the Return, Vol 2}}}} He was a brave strategist who defeated enemies before they even knew the battle had begun.{{ref|name=SOTR2}} He was also purportedly the greatest blacksmith the {{Lore Link|Atmora}}ns had ever known.{{ref|name=SotR5|{{Cite book|Songs of the Return, Volume 5}}}}

After the human city of {{Lore Link|Saarthal}} was sacked by the {{Lore Link|Snow Elf|Elves}}, in an event known as the {{Lore Link|Night of Tears}}, Yngol fled back to Atmora with his father and brother.{{ref|name=SOTR2}} According to {{Lore Link|Nord}}ic myth, he forged {{Lore Link|Wuuthrad}}, Ysgramor's legendary battleaxe, on the deck of the fleeing ship the same night and presented it to his father.{{ref|name=SotR5}}

After returning to Atmora, Ysgramor sent Yngol and his brother to recruit the bravest warriors of the land and form the {{Lore Link|Five Hundred Companions}}. During the Return, he commanded a ship called the Harakk, but it was lost during the Storm of Separation just before they arrived at {{Lore Link|Hsaarik Head}}.{{ref|name=SOTR2}} It was eventually found along the shore, but Yngol was dead.{{ref|name=SOTR2}}{{ref|name=YATSG|{{Cite book|Yngol and the Sea-Ghosts}}}} It was a devastating loss to the Five Hundred Companions.{{ref|name=NOYB|{{Cite book|Notes on Yngol Barrow}}}} It is said that Ysgramor wept in his grief and slew a dozen dozen beasts, burning them in honor of his fallen son.{{ref|name=YATSG}} A barrow-hill was dug in the [[Lore:Atmora|Atmoran]] tradition, and Yngol was laid to rest with rites and honors among his clansmen far below the rocky face of Hsaarik Head, the first of the Children of the Sky to perish in {{Lore Link|Tamriel}}.{{ref|name=YATSG}}{{ref|name=SOTR2}} Yngol's resting place ultimately determined the placement of {{Lore Link|Windhelm}} and the Palace of the Kings, as Ysgramor wanted to be able to view his son's resting place from the windows of his palace.{{ref|name=SOTR19|{{Cite book|Songs of the Return, Vol 19}}}}

In {{Year|4E 201}}, the {{Lore Link|Hero|Last Dragonborn}} explored his tomb and encountered the ghostly shade of Yngol. After defeating the spirit, Yngol's ancient enchanted helmet was retrieved from his skeletal remains.{{ref|name=Skyrim|Events of [[Skyrim:Skyrim|Skyrim]].}}<noinclude>
