This is a book which was written by Direnil the Necromancer in 4E 3. It is commonly believed to be the ravings of a lunatic (hence the name) but in fact it is full of wisdom and secrets to unlocking hidden things and lost secrets and items. It was published in 4E 101 by an elderly yet successful former Imperial Scrbe Gaius Perelius; at this time however, Direnil had all but disappeared to the city of Daggerfall where he studied among a weak and fleeting Mages Guild (it is ironic that not only did they allow a ''vampire'' into their ranks but also a necromancer, against which laws were made following the death of the last Arch-Mage of the Mages Guild.) Poems and simple ravings and sentences.

== Histories ==

:To activate the crystal ball
:Inside the palace; beyond the walls
:Shock, Ice, Flame and Fire
:To overcome mortal desires

:To sit atop the giant throne
:Gather each of the tomes
:And keep the scrolls safe from the fox
:And open up the tiny box

:The silent woods of the home
:With grasses green and secrets shone
:The little people of the woods
:Not cross their you really should
:I ask you that these words you heed
:For mischief they all have considerable greed
:They like to fight the passerby
:Kill them now before you DIE!

:The skull robed man was
:Forever damned
:Why, then, did he walk the land?
:When see a chance he did again
:He traveled, fought, and then he came
:And as the good mage left the town
:He came to strike the skull robe down

As I lie I hear the cries of tortured innocents and fleshflies and as the grass is stained blood red I drag myself from my cold bed and as I walk down through the halls I gaze above to ceilings tall and as I see the walking dead with just one arm and no head I vow to the world of Nirn as shall stand firm to save the harmless and punish those with lots of malice and as you read this I plead to you don't make this same mistake, too.

== Publishers Note ==

On the poems above.

The "crystal ball" poem refers to the giant crystal ball which was once held in the basement of the Imperial Palace but disappeared in 3E 438. It is said that the thief somehow used it to live forever and not have to eat or drink mortal foods or have any mortal desires. It is commonly believed that he in fact became a vampire.

The "giant throne" poem refers to the giant throne which was also stolen in 3E 438 from the basement of the Imperial Palace. To "sit" is not literal. Instead it means to become immortal and powerful by using the throne somehow/ The "tomes" are believed to be spell tomes. The "fox" refers to the Gray Fox who in the third era stole one of the Elder Scrolls. It is not known what the "tiny box" is or was.

The third poem refers to the pixie-like creatures which are the servants of one of the Nine called Spriggans. This has been forgotten now and this is one of the few written records of these elusive creatures.

The "skull robe" poem refers to the event on which a former Archmage of the Mages Guild (3E 433-436) fought and killed Mannimarco, the King of Worms.

The final doublet refers to Direnil's life as a customary Necromancer. Direnil is famous for having "used Necromancy for the gain of all" as he put it. Now on to the next section.

== Prophecies ==

:Does he see us or does he not?
:When all of his plans have come to naught.
:He gazes through a looking glass,
:To find exactly what he sought.

:Does he mean it
:Or is it a mistake?
:The lives of many
:He doth now take
:Spread some icing on the cake
:And now it's all done by mistake.

:There's someone in my head now.
:I just know it.
:He's in there
:Plotting revenge against
:The world.
:He's hurting me, you know.
:MAKE IT STOP!

:We all end someday.

:Pain and pleasure
:Toil and sin
:Someday I'll burn forever
:And join my fallen kin.

== Publisher's Note ==

On the poems above.

The first poem speaks of the greed and want and lust for power that all mortals feel. But when we finally do have it all, does it matter? No. It doesn't, does it? This want drives many insane and drives them to satisfy themselves with murderous impulses thus the second poem. It was truly all one by mistake.

It is thought that the third poem refers to a time in Direnil's life when he was kept imprisoned, his thoughts searched; what couldn't be found or what he blocked was tortured out of him. His captors are unknown.

The last poem simply refers to Direnil's transformation into a vampire. At the time, this was a prophecy to him, as he simply received visions about it.

== Publisher's Note ==

These are ravings detailing Direnil's 80 year period of isolation following his torture and imprisonment. Not much can be said, except that the final passage was the point where he snapped and killed 23 innocents in the Imperial City itself before the Dark Brotherhood found him. Vicente Montierre, descendant of a vampire who died nearly 5 centuries before, turned him into a vampire, and then -- realizing what he had become -- Direnil fled to the city of Daggerfall. He hasn't been seen since.

''Direnil the Necromancer was only seen 1,000 years later during the Rise of the Mer series, in which he is revealed as the brother of the immortal Areldir, King of the Summerset Isle during that time.''
