{{Lore:Appendices}}
The {{Lore Link|Septim Dynasty}} was founded by the legendary {{Lore Link|Talos}}, who took the {{Lore Link|Cyrodiil|Cyrodilic}} name of Tiber Septim and later established the {{Lore Link|Third Empire}} of {{Lore Link|Tamriel}} in {{Year|2E 897}} after {{Lore Link|Tiber Wars|decades of conquest}}, thus marking the end of the {{Lore Link|Second Era}} and the advent of the {{Lore Link|Third Era}}.

Under the Septims, Tamriel prospered and its provinces enjoyed peace and stability that had not been seen since before the chaotic centuries of the {{Lore Link|Interregnum}}. New conflicts would still arise, however, which would stretch the Empire to the breaking point throughout the Third Era. A battle over the royal succession ensued during the {{Lore Link|War of the Red Diamond}} between {{Year|3E 120}} and {{Year|3E 127}}. The {{Lore Link|Camoran Usurper}} seized control of {{Lore Link|Valenwood}} and {{Lore Link|Hammerfell}} from {{Year|3E 249}} to {{Year|3E 267}}. Emperor {{Lore Link|Uriel Septim V}} spearheaded an ill-fated invasion of {{Lore Link|Akavir}} in {{Year|3E 288}}, resulting in the emperor's death and the loss of a considerable portion of the Empire's military strength. Imperial Battlemage {{Lore Link|Jagar Tharn}} overthrew the rightful emperor and ruled for a decade beginning in {{Year|3E 389}}, a period that would become known as the {{Lore Link|Imperial Simulacrum}}.

Through all of these challenges, the Empire held and the Septim line survived. Their end came in {{Year|3E 433}} with the onset of the {{Lore Link|Oblivion Crisis}}. Emperor {{Lore Link|Uriel Septim VII}} and his heirs were assassinated by the {{Lore Link|Mythic Dawn}} in a single night, and the {{Lore Link|Dragonfires}} ceased to burn. The {{Lore Link|Daedric Prince}} {{Lore Link|Mehrunes Dagon}} launched a massive invasion of Tamriel. Although one last Septim heir, {{Lore Link|Martin Septim}}, was located, he sacrificed himself to repel the Daedra and seal {{Lore Link|Mundus}} off from {{Lore Link|Oblivion}} forever. With the Septims gone and the Empire's fate uncertain, the Third Era concluded and the {{Lore Link|Fourth Era}} began.

The table to the left shows the emperors and empresses and their regnal dates. The chart below details the lineage of the Septim family in the first-degree only. In both cases, the date of birth and death should be interpreted as ''Era / Year''. For example, "2E/125" should be read as "Second Era in the year 125". All unknown dates and names are noted with the inclusion of "???". A † symbol next to a date of death indicates that the death was not natural. Names in '''bold''' indicate ruling emperors.

References are given in the usual style, but cases where calculation or inference are involved, or where contradictions exist, are marked as "nb" and appear in a separate section.
