Detailed Walkthrough
Quest Offer
When speaking to a merchant or innkeeper, he or she may say:
(exclamation), you look like that (player's race), (player's name). Is that you, (player's first name)?
or
You're not by any chance (player's name), are you?
or
Wait a minute. You're not (player's name), are you?
Quest Acceptance
Merchant/Innkeeper goes on:
Thief! You're the one who stole my (gem)! Warrior! Kill!"
or
You've got a lot of nerve coming back here after taking my (gem)! My associate (warrior's name) will take care of your business now.
Quest Decline
Merchant/Innkeeper answers:
All right then. Just curious.
or
Good. No offense.
Quest Object
This is one of the most complex quests in the game, not because of its difficulty, but because of the various combinations of NPCs involved. When you accept this quest, your Regional Reputation will drop by 200 points. A warrior will also show up to fight you, so defeat him and escape. 25 to 50 in-game minutes after starting the quest, you will receive a letter from one or more groups, depending on your reputation with them.
Faction/Person | Minimum Reputation |
---|---|
The Necromancers | +10 |
The Thieves Guild | +10 |
Agents of the Underking | +10 |
The letters tell you that there is a certain witness in the town where you received the quest who can help prove your innocence. Ask around town for the witness's location until you are directed to the tavern the witness is staying in.
If your reputation with the above factions is lower than 10, you will receive a letter from an anonymous person who will direct you to a person suspected to be the true culprit. However, these letters are often inaccurate due to an oversight in the quest, so it is often better to search for the witness.
Once you have found the witness, speak to him and he will raise the alarm and flee, but will also slip a note into your pocket. Kill the knight that attacks you, then read the note to learn the location of a secure building in town where you can speak to the witness in private. The doors to this building will be locked, so you will need some means to gain entrance. Once you are inside, talk to the witness and you will learn the true culprit's identity. You will also be told of a dungeon where the gem is located and a building in town which will contain exonerating evidence. You must obtain both to complete the quest, though the order does not matter.
The Evidence
Gain entry to the building where the evidence is located from 02:01 to 23:59. Inside you will find a letter mentioning the true culprit's plan and the name of his adversary. Ask around town for the city the adversary lives in and travel to that city. Once you reach the adversary's home town, ask around to find his location. Once you have learned which building the adversary is in, speak to him with the culprit's letter and he will promise to clear your name if you can retrieve the gem. Travel to the dungeon the witness directed you to and find the gem within. When you have found it, return to the town where you first obtained the quest.
Quest End
When you return the gem to the questgiver, he will say:
So, it wasn't you who stole my (gem) at all. (exclamation), I feel ashamed for wrongly accusing you. Here, please accept this (jewelry) as my apology. I'll make certain that the (town) guards know that you're an innocent (player's race).
Reputation Gain/Loss
Your regional reputation for the province you undertake the quest in will be affected by your actions in this quest according to the following table:
Action | Reputation Gain |
---|---|
Accepting the quest | -200 |
Completing the quest | +110 |
A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.
Faction/Person | Reputation Gain |
---|---|
Questgiver's faction | +15 |
Questgiver's associated factions | +7 |
A failed quest (time limit expired) results in a reputation loss according to the table below.
Faction/Person | Reputation Gain |
---|---|
Questgiver's faction | -2 |
Questgiver's associated factions | -1 |
Enemies
- Random Dungeon Monsters
- One Warrior as soon as the quest is started
- One Knight when you speak with the witness
- One Rogue if you talk to any of the quest relevant NPCs without the letter proving your innocence
- One Spellsword if you talk to the quest culprit after you have given the letter proving your innocence to his/her adversary
Notes
- This quest is broken in the original game. The game crashes to DOS as soon as you save after accepting the quest due to an internal error 1000 (Duplicated Map ID).
- The questgiver will be absent until you bring the culprit's letter to his or her adversary. If the questgiver provides a service to you, this service will be gone as well.
- Many string variables in the quest dialogue are used incorrectly, resulting in false or no locations being given for certain quest-related NPCs.
- This quest is affected by an occasional bug which causes certain quest locations to be withheld. See here for further information.
- This is one of only three quests which can influence your Regional Reputation. Because regional reputation can never go below -100, this quest can restore your reputation in a certain province to a slightly positive value if it is 0 or below. However, you should not accept this quest if your regional reputation is already above 0, as the reputation gain from completing the quest is significantly lower than the penalty for accepting it.
- If you don't return the gem to the questgiver, it will remain in your inventory after the quest is complete, unlike most quest items.
